Humans are able to detect threatening stimuli more quickly than non-threatening ones as we are born with automatic detection systems.
The "stop" sign in Figure 4.5 utilizes threat detection because of the red colour on it that usually indicates danger. Hence it makes the sign more attention drawing compared to other things around it. When we are driving on the road, these signs have a pop up effect too because of the bright red that also means stop in a traffic light.
