Wayfinding

Example:  PAPAGO! App

There are four processes involve in wayfinding, namely orientation, route decision, route monitoring and destination recognition.

  • Orientation

Figure 6.6.1 shows the PAPAGO! interface
Figure 6.6.2 shows the PAPAGO! interface
Orientation helps user to determine their location, through nearby objects and features.  The GPS application exhibits orientation by providing a visual graphic of the nearby landmarks to the user (shown in Figure 6.6.1 and Figure 6.6.2). This enables the user to determine their position accurately,

  • Route Decision
When the user enters his destination, the GPS application will search and analyse for the possible routes to reach to the destination. Ultimately, it will decide on choosing the shortest one and then display that route to the user.

  • Route Monitoring

Figure 6.6.3 shows the PAPAGO! interface with 3 upcoming roads listed (highlighted in red on the right).
The GPS application exhibits route monitoring as it will display the three upcoming roads that the user should turn to (seen in Figure 6.6.3). It also indicates the distance before the user will reaches the particular road as well, enabling the user to monitor the route so that it leads to the correct destination. The route that is taken is also highlighted as well, providing the user with visual cues.

  • Destination Recognition
Figure 6.6.4 shows a flag at the end of the route (highlighted in red).
The flag which is seen at the end of the route (in Figure 6.6.4) symbolises the user's destination, Therefore, it has destination recognition as it gives the destination a clear identity, When the user sees the flag, they will automatically know that they are reaching the destination.
